Migration health is now recommended as a new thematic area at the Colombo Process agenda
Dr. P. G. Mahipala, Director General of Health Services (DGHS), of the Ministry of Health, Sri Lanka, made an intervention at the 5th Ministerial Consultation of the Colombo Process, emphasizing the need to include the health of labor migrants, into relevant dialogues. The Colombo Process is a regional consultative process on the management of overseas employment and contractual labor for countries of origin in Asia.
Speaking on behalf of the Government of Sri Lanka/ Ministry of Health, Dr. Mahipala highlighted the importance of positive health behaviors and healthcare access to ensure the health of migrants. He also noted that, while there are many opportunities within the identified Five Key thematic areas of the Colombo Process to address some of the health issues, there are many other health issues that may not come under the exact definition of existing thematic areas, and suggested that a separate thematic area to comprehensively address health concerns of labour migrants.
